Holy Trinity Cathedral Consecration
The remarkable evolution of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral is a source of great pride for its congregation. The Orthodox faithful, who settled in New Orleans during the nineteenth century, provided the initiative and leadership to establish the first Greek Orthodox Church in America. During the past 136 years, generations have witnessed its progression from a small mission church on North Dorgenois Street, to a larger edifice completed in 1950 at the same site, and, finally, to the magnificent Byzantine structure relocated adjacent to Bayou Saint John on Robert E. Lee Boulevard. Each noteworthy development marks a milestone in the local ecclesiastical history of the Greek Orthodox faith.

On February 4, 2001, our community celebrated another significant occurrence. The Cathedral, completed in 1985, was formally dedicated to the ministry of our Lord in a spiritually moving Consecration Service. To solemnize this auspicious and venerable occasion, Archbishop Demetrios of America, Bishop Alexios of Atlanta, and Bishop John of Amorion co-celebrated with Reverend Father Anthony Stratis, Dean of Holy Trinity, and numerous clergymen. The congregation proudly invites you to attend a Cathedral Tour during your visit to the Greek Festival and to take special note of the new iconography that Byzantine painter Laurence Manos finished prior to the Consecration.

Consecration Commemorative Ornaments were created for this special event and are still available for $15 from the Cathedral office — 504-282-0259.
